Naturalization Workshop Non-Attorney Volunteer - Fridays, Saturdays

Overview //

Help eligible immigrants apply to become citizens! No foreign language skills or legal background required. This day-long workshop will walk applicants through the process of filling out the naturalization application. A few different opportunities are available for our non-attorney volunteers, from registering all incoming attendees, to working one-on-one with attendees to fill their applications, to helping staff direct and track all attendees. This is a great opportunity for law students and paralegals. Mandatory training for first-time volunteers is provided at the first workshop attended.

CompTIA Instructor- Virtual

Overview //

Help your immigrant and refugee neighbors earn their CompTIA certification! Instructors needed for virtual classes. The ideal candidate will have CompTIA certification or an IT background and be willing to attain the certification. Need to feel confident teaching small group of students.


The candidate must be able to commit to minimum one class per week for 14 weeks of teaching. You will receive ample curriculum and resources, training, professional development, and additional support from EWD staff throughout the semester. Please email ewd@ccda.net for more information!

Education Workforce Development - Internship

Overview //

The Adult Education Intern will get hands-on experience in program management by working with students and staff to aid and resources to individuals in the Northern Virginia area. These services include assisting with connecting students to resources and completing student check-ins and follow ups.

INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:

· Curriculum development and lesson planning; teaching methods and classroom management

· Summative and formative assessments

· Drafting communications, program improvement, and evaluation

· Improve upon written and communication skills

· Program and project management, creating leadership and client development recommendations

· Work in a team environment with staff and volunteers

· Through one-on-one client interaction, learn about challenges and opportunities experienced by clients enrolled in the program

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Monitor and maintain records on clients/students'' progress

· Assist in contacting clients via emails and phone calls

· Manage client and student information and data

· Assist clients in learning how to use classroom platforms like Zoom

· Assist with student registrations and data collection

· Assist with coordination of student conversation groups

· Gather and organize materials and resources related to content area

· Promote our program in the community; participate in special projects as assigned

· Personal teaching portfolio with standards-aligned unit plans, lesson plans, and classroom materials

· Compile unit plans, lesson plans, and classroom materials as a resource for volunteer teachers

· Assist with program coordination of online learning program

· Assess areas in which students may require assistance

QUALIFICATIONS:

Human Development/Services, Human Services, Nonprofit Studies, or other related major
Working knowledge of at least one critical foreign language preferred (Spanish, Dari, Farsi)

Must be motivated, organized, and possess professional communication skills
Commitment to the mission and goals of Education and Workforce Development program and CCDA

This opportunity is an ON-CALL TYPE OF EVENT.

We often put pleas out in the middle of the week for help needed to deliver supplies or help with a clothing distribution when we get large donations and limited storage.

We often need to organize our donations and make them ready to distribute to our refugee clients. If you can only help now and then, this might be your position!

We often have on-call opportunities to help us with food and clothing distributions.
If you are interested in helping with Driving - there is added training.

We also need strong backs to help with picking up donated furniture.

Schedules are based on your availability.

Summer/Fall 2024 Legal Internship



Hogar Immigrant Services - Legal is seeking interns (unpaid) for Summer and Fall 2024.


Prerequisites for the Position



  • One year of law school;

  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Hogar Immigrant Services - Legal/Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington;

  • Spanish fluency or strong proficiency preferred (we have a limited capacity to take on nonbilingual interns due to our client base);

  • Genuine interest in immigration law;

  • Availability to work a minimum of 40 hours/week in the Summer and a minimum of 12 to 15 hours/week during the Fall semester.



Summary of Major Duties and Responsibilities



  • Assist immigration attorneys with new client consultations and naturalization follow up appointments;

  • Conduct legal research into various immigration issues, including: family-based cases, U-Visa and VAWA cases, naturalization, and various forms of relief from removal;

  • Engage in client interviewing and counseling and prepare client applications under the supervision of attorneys and/or DOJ Accredited Representatives for submission to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Department of State, and the Arlington Immigration Court;

  • Serve as interpreter for clients at interviews with immigration officers at USCIS;

  • Translate legal documents from Spanish, Dari, or Pashto to English;

  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda regarding complex legal issues;

  • Attend hearings at Arlington Immigration Court;

  • Participate in monthly legal services workshops addressing various community needs such as citizenship/naturalization application screening and preparation, pro se asylum education, and Temporary Protected Status screening and preparation. Workshops sometimes take place on Saturdays;

  • Attend weekly staff meetings;

  • Participate in meetings with immigration legal service community-based organizations;

  • Participate in public education on immigration to area community groups; and

  • Other related duties as assigned.



Supervision: All legal interns will be supervised by attorneys, the Supervising Attorney, and the Program Director of Hogar Immigrant Services - Legal.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE DIOCESE OF ARLINGTON THE BORDER IS EVERYWHERE (TBIE) INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION (Manassas Office)

BENEFITS AND GOALS:
Through one-on-one client interaction, learn about the systemic challenges/opportunities clients encounter
Learn about services available to clients upon arrival; gain direct experience in helping TBIE clients navigate community resources
Work under experienced staff to gain an understanding of cases from open to closure
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Border is Everywhere asylum services focuses on family reunification and assistance to the most vulnerable asylum seekers. The intern supports the needs of individuals and families in deportation proceedings or at risk of deportation. The intern works with individuals and families to connect to resources including but not limited to housing, food, clothing, healthcare and mental health services. DUTIES: In cooperation with and as directed by the Program Director
Work with immigration attorneys to identify high vulnerability cases and open services for identified families
Complete navigation service plans for each participant
Provide service navigation for affected families
Advocate for individuals and families in government, non-profit and health service systems
Provide information and referral services for affected families
Respond as able to urgent needs of individuals and families
Create and maintain relationships with partners in relevant systems

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the constantly changing immigration situation
Assist in organizing Know Your Rights or other community education efforts
Participate in program planning and development consistent with Trauma-Informed Care
Attend staff/agency trainings and meetings as well as supervision meetings with Program Director of CCDA and CCUSA
Adherence to Catholic Charities policies and procedures
Perform other duties as assigned
TIME COMMITMENT:
Hours required by the school per week
Be available three days a week
Must be available after business hours due to clients'' availability
Should make up missed internship hours within 14 days
EXPECTATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Be reliable and on time; communicate with the supervisor
Act in a professional and ethical manner in all interactions with agency staff and clients
Understanding multiple languages is a requirement (Spanish is a priority)
Currently studying applicable graduate coursework relevant to the TBIE program
Submit conference agendas an hour prior to weekly supervision meetings
Submit process recordings for review based on the school''s requirement
Have reliable transportation to do the internship at the Manassas Office, CCDA offices and visit clients
