Naturalization Workshop Non-Attorney Volunteer - Fridays, Saturdays

Overview //

Help eligible immigrants apply to become citizens! No foreign language skills or legal background required. This day-long workshop will walk applicants through the process of filling out the naturalization application. A few different opportunities are available for our non-attorney volunteers, from registering all incoming attendees, to working one-on-one with attendees to fill their applications, to helping staff direct and track all attendees. This is a great opportunity for law students and paralegals. Mandatory training for first-time volunteers is provided at the first workshop attended.

Senior Center Kitchen Helper (Breakfast and Lunch)

We are looking for people interested in helping serve food! St. Martin de Porres Senior Center provides continental breakfast and a nutritious hot lunch to seniors. The senior center serves hot drinks, bread, cereal (both hot and cold) and pastries in the morning. During lunch, we prepare trays, serve meals to the senior, and clean the kitchen after lunch. Volunteers, who are interested in serving food to the seniors, please email us to specify if you are available to help with breakfast, lunch, or both! We are looking for nurses who are interested in providing blood pressure checks and educational presentations on health topics, infectious diseases, and updates. While administrating blood pressure checks, seniors may ask questions about medical problems or conditions. This opportunity is available for nursing students/graduates 21 years or older. Upon registration, we will schedule an interview and privacy training.

St. Martin de Porres Senior Center provides activities to high functioning and independent seniors who love to play games and do activities throughout the day. The seniors love playing board games, card games, Wii bowling, team games, Bingo, one-on-one games as examples, and are always ready to learn new activities. Games are available at the center, but if you want to bring in a new game that is good too. A binder is available with how to guides on how to play games that are available in the center. Staff is also available to do refreshers on how to play games/teach how to play the game.

Help your immigrant and refugee neighbors earn their CompTIA certification! Instructors needed for virtual classes. The ideal candidate will have CompTIA certification or an IT background and be willing to attain the certification. Need to feel confident teaching small group of students.

Food Pantry Distribution Support

Overview //

Help us help those with food insecurities by working in our food pantry. You will love the people you work with and those you have the privilege to serve. Training will be provided.

Education Workforce Development - Internship

Overview //

The Adult Education Intern will get hands-on experience in program management by working with students and staff to aid and resources to individuals in the Northern Virginia area. These services include assisting with connecting students to resources and completing student check-ins and follow ups.

INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:

· Curriculum development and lesson planning; teaching methods and classroom management

· Summative and formative assessments

· Drafting communications, program improvement, and evaluation

This opportunity is an ON-CALL TYPE OF EVENT.

We often put pleas out in the middle of the week for help needed to deliver supplies or help with a clothing distribution when we get large donations and limited storage.

We often need to organize our donations and make them ready to distribute to our refugee clients. If you can only help now and then, this might be your position!

We often have on-call opportunities to help us with food and clothing distributions.
If you are interested in helping with Driving - there is added training.

We also need strong backs to help with picking up donated furniture.

Schedules are based on your availability.

Mentoring Youth in Virginia (MYVA) Assistant - Multiple Locations

This life-changing youth program helps youngsters achieve their life dreams.

The MYVA program Specialists pair volunteers with one of our clients to work on school and civic-minded projects more intensively and build personal relationships while helping refugees between the ages of 15 and 24 years of age achieve their goals!

It addresses youth's social, community, educational, and vocational goals. You will transform a young person's life and build relationships that will last. We prefer a six-month commitment.

Hygiene Care Kits

Overview //

The Mobile Response Center is a Catholic Charities ministry that delivers personal hygiene and cleaning supplies to poverty-stricken communities within our Diosese. We distribute monthly to approximately 100 families in Woodstock, VA as well as to other Catholic Charities Network Pantries. We provide them with much needed personal hygiene care bags and other essentials such as laundry detergent.
Families who are eligible to receive SNAP/EBT benefits are not able to purchase these everyday supplies.

The Mother of Mercy Clinic provides free, quality healthcare to low-income individuals who are uninsured or under-insured. The clinics have ongoing needs for volunteers in a variety of roles:

Hogar Immigrant Services - Legal is seeking interns (unpaid) for Summer and Fall 2024.


Prerequisites for the Position



  • One year of law school;

  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Hogar Immigrant Services - Legal/Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington;

  • Spanish fluency or strong proficiency preferred (we have a limited capacity to take on nonbilingual interns due to our client base);

  • Genuine interest in immigration law;

  • Availability to work a minimum of 40 hours/week in the Summer and a minimum of 12 to 15 hours/week during the Fall semester.



Summary of Major Duties and Responsibilities



  • Assist immigration attorneys with new client consultations and naturalization follow up appointments;

  • Conduct legal research into various immigration issues, including: family-based cases, U-Visa and VAWA cases, naturalization, and various forms of relief from removal;

  • Engage in client interviewing and counseling and prepare client applications under the supervision of attorneys and/or DOJ Accredited Representatives for submission to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Department of State, and the Arlington Immigration Court;

  • Serve as interpreter for clients at interviews with immigration officers at USCIS;

  • Translate legal documents from Spanish, Dari, or Pashto to English;

  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda regarding complex legal issues;

  • Attend hearings at Arlington Immigration Court;

  • Participate in monthly legal services workshops addressing various community needs such as citizenship/naturalization application screening and preparation, pro se asylum education, and Temporary Protected Status screening and preparation. Workshops sometimes take place on Saturdays;

  • Attend weekly staff meetings;

  • Participate in meetings with immigration legal service community-based organizations;

  • Participate in public education on immigration to area community groups; and

  • Other related duties as assigned.



Supervision: All legal interns will be supervised by attorneys, the Supervising Attorney, and the Program Director of Hogar Immigrant Services - Legal.

The purpose of the Parish Liaison Network (PLN) is to help Catholic Charities and the Parishes work in concert in serving those most in need, thereby increasing the effectiveness in the Church's call to serve. As a PLN volunteer, you will represent your Parish and work with Catholic Charities. You will learn what Catholic Charities does and help Catholic Charities best serve your Parish. St. Margaret of Cortona Transitional & Maternity Housing, a pro-life ministry for pregnant and single mothers in the Diocese of Arlington, is seeking childcare volunteers on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm so that the mothers can attend weekly Life Skills classes. Please consider giving an hour of your time to help families grow in mind, body and spirit!

CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE DIOCESE OF ARLINGTON THE BORDER IS EVERYWHERE (TBIE) INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION (Manassas Office)

BENEFITS AND GOALS:
Through one-on-one client interaction, learn about the systemic challenges/opportunities clients encounter
Learn about services available to clients upon arrival; gain direct experience in helping TBIE clients navigate community resources

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Border is Everywhere asylum services focuses on family reunification and assistance to the most vulnerable asylum seekers. The intern supports the needs of individuals and families in deportation proceedings or at risk of deportation. The intern works with individuals and families to connect to resources including but not limited to housing, food, clothing, healthcare and mental health services. DUTIES: In cooperation with and as directed by the Program Director
Work with immigration attorneys to identify high vulnerability cases and open services for identified families
Complete navigation service plans for each participant
Provide service navigation for affected families
Advocate for individuals and families in government, non-profit and health service systems
Provide information and referral services for affected families
Respond as able to urgent needs of individuals and families
Create and maintain relationships with partners in relevant systems
